Thank you for answering my request for this one (and as I said I hope this one doesn’t end up with me crying like I did with “The Aristocrat” ๐ ). I really appreciate you doing this for us. Biggest of hugs! ๐
Oh dear just starting this and author got the British aristocracy wrong (says the American ๐ ) … For my friends out there – order is – Duke (His Grace), Marquess (which she missed and in Europe they are referred to as Marquis, Your Lordship or My Lord), Earl (My Lord), Viscount (My Lord), and Baron (My Lord) below that is non-royal titles such as Baronet and Knight (like Paul McCartney, called Sir McCartney). I remember it by Duke then MEV. Duke is almost next to the King and Prince in treatment and either given to royal blood (like Prince William, Duke of Cambridge) or especially after the Napoleonic wars, to someone for exceptional life service to the Crown as a reward. From internet: The last non-royal dukedom was created in 1900 for the former Earl of Fife, who was upgraded to Duke following his wedding to Queen Victoria’s granddaughter. There might have been a new one in 1955 when the Queen offered one to Churchill, but he declined, preferring to die a commoner.
Unbelievable that young aristocratic girls had to be schooled from birth in all this social etiquette and manners in addition to memorizing yearly Debrett’s book of Who’s Who in the Aristocracy so as to marry well. We women have it sooooo good today! (At least in the Western World or where women have relative freedom of life choice.) ๐
Thank you
