Maddie’s uncle is in trade in London and lives at 21 Gracechurch Street. A few years after she comes to live with them, she meets her uncle’s protégé, Edward Gardiner.
The story follows them from the time they marry onwards. At first the way they Take Charge is more subtle. Until there is a good reason to do so, they cannot be too forceful in their assistance. After all, they have to maintain a balance so that the Bennet parents do not sever their relationship with their Bennet nieces. Even before they are blessed with their own children, Maddie and Edward are very close to some of their Bennet nieces and love hosting them in London for periods of time.
There comes a point where they must step in and Take Charge in a much more direct way. The reason for them to do so is as much because of some of the villains we love to hate from P&P canon, as it is because of the actions of some that we see as heroes and heroines. The questions as to what causes the Gardiners to feel like they have no choice but to step in actively are all answered in this tale.
